Thank you for your comment, for naming this post "provocative" and for thinking. I hope you, me and others might do more thinking about our own thinking.

Anne,
Insightful and provocative post.
I think this line is powerful:
"While examining the image, I saw the very thing that allowed George Zimmerman to go after Trayvor Martin. The making of another into something not quite as human as I am."

I think we do that more than realize - especially when it comes to crimes, heinous acts. I also think this is an assumption about why George Zimmerman killed Trayvor Martin. It could very well be accurate & I certainly believed it initially and probably even now. But we don't know what was going on in his head. I also think it has to do with a Stand YOur Ground mentality, having a gun available and not trained how to use it or not use it when you're in a possible confrontation or afraid yourself.
I disagree with Jen Kuhn that she can know for certain she would not do the same thing in a similar situation; I like to think the same thing as she but until "we've been there" we don't really know.
I could go on and on because you've made me think and I thank you for that and your candor. Hugs, Cherry

tremendous post, anne! i also appreciate the points that you and jen make in the follow-up comments. it is difficult not to distance oneself from actions that go against our conscious beliefs.

the following website has a quickish way to discover if you have underlying biases to other groups. it's been described as horrifying (lol!) as the results often aren't what the test-taker wants to hear. it was referenced in "blink" by malcolm gladwell which is a book i highly recommend. i found it fascinating.

Hi Anne,

Your perspective is so enlightening! I hadn't thought about other extreme, collective acts that have resulted from (primarily) a lack of awareness and an unwillingness to examine the roots of our prejudices. Your points are compelling. I appreciate your insight.

Thanks,
Jen

Jen, I appreciate the conversation, and you are right. Neither of us took action based on our stereotyping of Zimmerman. I fear, however, as a country we may influence collective action versus self reflection in this case. Making the "other" less human is a necessary, although not sufficient condition, for the full range of actions, from small insults up to horrific acts, such as The Holocaust, genocides, etc. If we can address the underlying thinking, we will go a long way toward becoming the diversity we wish to see in the world. Again thank you for being a thought partner in the virtual world.

Hi Anne,

Wow. You've written a very thought provoking post. It's remarkable how easy it is to distance oneself from the horrible acts of another. Although I'm certain I would not have replicated the behaviors of George Zimmerman, I did apply some of his stereotyping behavior to my opinion of him. I stereotyped Zimmerman. He was quick to judge Trayvon Martin. Though the difference between his stereotyping and mine or yours is that he applied lethal, deadly force to solidify his assumptions.
The fact that Zimmerman is married does not change my views on his decision to kill Trayvon Martin. What that fact does for me is make him more than one dimensional, but does not in any way change my opinion of his behavior.
I agree that it is critical to raise our awareness of our own latent stereotypes. With this awareness comes new thoughts. Though without this awareness, I do not agree that one may be capable of committing a deadly act against another human being. The acts committed are small, daily and damaging. But not deadly.

Respectfully,
Jen

In fact social media and personal branding are all about tooting your own horn -- as long as it's in a way that's useful for others.

Great point, Anne. Your simple reframe makes a huge difference. I struggle with this myself at times confusing humility with sharing important information. I am reminded of the saying, "if you don't toot your own horn, someone will use it as a spittoon."
