  • Learning How to Read the Room: Organization Development Network Conference, New Orleans, Oct 18, 2010 3:00pm
"What is going on in this group?" "Why are the interactions unproductive?" "How can I help the team have healthy conversations that lead to good decisions and productive relationships?" Every OD consultant,  leader, manager, and group member asks these questions and at times struggles to find the answers. Using David Kantor's theory of Structural Dynamics, Nancy Lonstein, Principal, and Dr. Anne Perschel, President, Germane Consulting, explain the The Four Player Model, the most accessible and discussable framework for understanding and improving the often invisible structures in face-to-face communications.

Only when the invisible becomes seen, can we take action for positive change.

Transformational Leadership Assessment

Becoming a transformational leader begins with an assessment of where you are today.  The Leadership Development Profile identifies your current stage of development as a leader in relation to both transactional and transformational leadership.  The stages range from Opportunitst and Expert at the beginning levels and finally to Strategist and Alchemist at the higher levels.  The various leadership stages correlate with adult ego development.

The Leadership Development Framework and the Profile are developed by William Torbert, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of leadership at Boston College along with colleagues at Harthill Consulting, Ltd., UK. Their work is adapted from Dr. Jane Loevinger’s model identifying adult stages of ego development and the related assessment – Sentence Completion Test.

Warning: Very few leaders score above Expert – Level 3 – and the world view commensurate with these first levels leads to a tendency to dismiss the instrument and the theory upon which it is based. So using the LDP is not for the feint of heart. It is important to keep in mind, however, that this is a developmental model and reaching higher levels is achievable.

Germane Consulting has developed a coaching model that helps leaders move through these stages.   This work requires an openness to considering other ways of perceiving, interpreting, and making meaning of the world around you.  In turn, these new world views enable you to discover solutions you could not see before.
